The last Project in this class was one that brought everything full circle because this project was about using all the lessons from the 5 shot sequences to interviewing and other things and creating a one minute story about a person in our school. I had a lot of struggles and accomplishments some accomplishments was creating a project that included a variety of skills and techniques. One of my struggles was getting enough b roll and composing each shot correctly. This was by far my favorite project because of the variety you can have. The purpose is another reason why loved this project because the purpose in my mind was to show off what you have learned. The best part for me was reviewing my footage right before I turned it in because I can say that I spent all of a semester learning the skills that went into that one minute story. I have learned a lot since taking this class because I have never done much with technology before taking this class. I took this class as just an elective but it became more than that because i was able to learn new skills on a computer and camera that I thought would take me a million years to figure out. Through this project I was able to prove to myself that is should try new things because of progression in just one semester.

Today we watched a couple of videos from the very talented Steve Hartman who has done a lot videos and during the videos we watched I got a lot of inset of how a professional does a story. During the interview I learned that was everyone has a story and even if it is not interesting it is relatable and the best question to ask is what is the hardest thing you have had to overcome because according to Steve it gets them talking about their story. Another main thing is to keep it like a conversion. The main point is how he tells that writing is not a gift it is just repetition and if you work hard you can become a good writer. When he is looking for a sound bite he is looking for something that he can't tell. The first video I watched of him was soul food which was about a woman named Suzanne lee who lives in South Carolina and cooks for everyone and what I noticed was the great soundbites and interview which is because in the video you get a sense of who she is and the soundbites and what he can't say with the same emotion as Suzanne. What I also noticed is the great interview questions where he asked as mention in the interview her biggest challenge which really brought out her story and why she does what she did. The next story I watched was called diving into the unknown which is about a kid who gets accepted onto the swim team because they were so bad and at the end it was the kid who couldn't swim that led his team to the final. What is great about his interview is the emotion he evokes out of people and how he shows that Gerald story is very relatable because everyone has a story of overcoming adversity. Another thing that was noticeable was how Steve set up the story where he starts broad where he talks about the teams failure and sets up Gerald and goes through his story and relating it back to America.
The next project that we are working on is interviewing an expert so we watched a very good video that firsts talk about The Who, what, when, where, why and how. The Video talks about finding cool people and these are people who are colorful, opinionated, outgoing and lively. The most important is why because it answers the question of why should someone care which is explained by the video that if the interviewer doesn't care the audience will not either. The next part is about questions and the video says we should ask to tell me questions because so it doesn't turn into a question and answer furthermore one person would be taking notes and looking for Broll and sound bites. The main point in the planning stage is just to remember that it is a conversation, not an interrogation. Third, the video has to have good audio because without good audio it is not a good interview. Next, the video goes into a composition where it says that the light should be behind the camera and that the camera goes over the shoulder of the reporter. A big part of interviewing the video talks about is there is always room to improve and the interviewer needs tone practicing how to give an interview with no interruptions and that they need to be prepared with a plan and a backup plan with multiple interviewers. One of the final things is conducting the interview and the tips are to not be in a rush and take your time as well as the interviewer should be helping the speaker with their type of question. The final thing is it shows a couple of tips like be honest and have a conversation as well as to have fun because that will translate to a good video.
Today I finished my first assignment. I did a story of a monster in the basement because when I was young I would only go downstairs with the sun shining and my dad with me which was because of the sounds that I would hear at night. To start the project I go to an extreme wide with a man on the porch. Next, I go over the shoulder on a text message. The third is a close up of the face next is a point of view going downstairs. 4th is a point of view shot going downstairs into the dark. After that is a medium shot of a man in the garage prepping his tools. Last, is a shot where the camera is on the ground and you don't know what really happened. I choose these shots because this whole process was very new so I tried to think out of the box a little bit but making sure I did not put to much pressure on the six shots that I was not familiar with. I learned how to overcome challenges because I shot a scene twice but then scratched it when I got a new idea and this taught me the importance of planning. I then learned the importance of understanding what you are doing because while I was acting my brother was not filming and he made a couple of mistakes which was resolved when he took his time and once that happened it became really easy. Overall, I was extremely proud that I created this video and the progress that I have seen in myself. To watch it click here
To start this project our class was asked to look at the most famous six-word story by Ernest Hemingway "For sale: baby shoes, never worn". It is interesting to see how it came about since it is a mystery. People believe that he wrote it on a napkin in a restaurant. Some say he wrote it in a hotel however most do believe that it was made because of a 10 dollar bet that he made with other writers. The only problem with these theories is Hemingway probably didn't write the story because starting in 1906 there were stories written called for "For Sale, Baby Carriage, Never Used." There are many other examples of stories like an article published in 1917 that had the title of "Little Shoes, Never Worn." The meaning of the story from what I have gathered is that it is in the eye of the beholder because he does not mention a meaning. The significance of the story is that it created a foundation for a new brand of story writing that anyone can do that can be just as powerful as an essay in a short amount of time. One of the stories I saw as I was looking for examples was Sorry soldier, shoes sold in pairs, which I liked because I could get the story of this soldier who lost his leg and it is a powerful story. The second one I liked was another powerful one that as soon as you read it you understand the story the paramedics finished her text, “love you”.
Today in class we started learning the program that many professionals use and the program that edited despacito. This is, of course, final cut pro today we set up the basics of putting a generator and a title at the beginning of the clips and our teacher let us play around with each clip we then learned audio which is supposed to be at -6 to -12 and he said that sound won't blow out any eardrums. We also learned how to trim shots using the blade mechanic and how to add transitions btw our shots. The audio can also be deleted from the clip which is something I learned today and you can do this by removing the audio from the clip and just deleting the audio clip. Towards the end of class, we were told how to upload our file using apple devices at 1080 hp and that our school installed a program that our teacher dislikes so we just save it to our desktop.
Today, we watched a video that introduced us to the world of broadcast and the video taught us what goes into creating a story sound bite and those are 10-second clips that summarize what the person is talking about and the 2nd part was b roll, simply the footage you got. the 2nd part talked about the equipment a camera, tripod, battery's media, headphones, and microphones. Then, it talks about the importance of these items. The video then goes on about wide medium and tight shots which create the foundation for your story with each shot having its purpose. Next, it mentions sequencing and how it is important to think like an editor when getting shots so that it tells a story. The video gives some advice that it should be continuous and if the shot isn't then you can cut away from the shot and focus on a different part of the body. It then talks about the rule of thirds when are when the camera puts the subject in a non-centralized location forcing the eyes to move to that location. When on lighting, a person must be aware of the available light and how much light he or she is letting in. Finally, the video gives ten tips that help for example one tip is to put the camera in manual focus so that the camera doesn't back focus or auto shift when something moves into the shot.
In the first unit we learned what goes into our school annocuments and what each element contributes to make the show happen and how to do those jobs. The first job Is Aja which is a computer program where they run the intro and outro as well as the flag and any another thing they want. The next job is the tech director which is a very important position because the tech director is in charge of moving to the next shot so the tech directors timing needs to be perfect as he gets directions from the director. Next, The floor director is in charge of conveying messages from the booth where the director sits to the anchors and the floor director is in charge of telling the anchors to go faster or to slow down as well as telling the anchors when to start. one of the final jobs is the sound board and they are not only in charge of checking the mics so the viewers ear drums don't break. The sound check also has to mic check all the programs and videos so the intro isn't blasting at us. The final job is the most important and most nerve racking which is the director because they are in charge of giving directions to everyone so he or she has to know the entire script and know each job to make sure things run smoothly. There are many other jobs but these were just my favorite jobs.
